Educational Games Can Motivate and Engage In today’s media filled environment, it is becoming increasingly difficult to compete for a child’s attention. To maximize a child’s educational potential, you must figure out not only how to get their attention, but how to keep them focused on the learning task. When children show a strong interest in a game or activity, they tend to stay at the task much longer. The longer they focus on the task, the more they learn. That’s only common sense. Today, we are fortunate to have a variety of educational activities that will keep your child interested, engaged and on task. These games usually combine the elements of surprise, suspense and reward. Research shows that the first few years of a child’s life have more impact on his/her future learning than any other time in life. That’s why it’s important to stimulate your child to think and engage in learning activities at an early age. Because it is difficult to compete with all the entertainment available, educational games use the same approach. It is like the old saying, “If you can’t beat them, join them”. Educational games motivate and stimulate multiple areas of a child’s senses. When engaged in educational games, multiple senses are stimulated. The child is using the senses of seeing, hearing, feeling and touching to learn. But, there is even another plus. If the child thinks he/she is playing, rather than studying, they tend to practice much longer and with more intent. This only increases learning and retention. So, if you are having trouble getting your child involved in learning, try a few games. You can find them for almost any type of educational activity. You might just be surprised what they learn.
