What
You Should Consider in Purchasing Many students want to take a computer to college. Although, most college campuses give students access to their computer labs, having your own computer has some distinct advantages. With your own computer you have convenient access to the network resources of the campus such as email, Internet and printers. The two biggest decisions student will have about computers is 1) what type of computer to take to campus and 2) what minimum configuration requirements that computer should have. The most important thing a student can do is to check out any requirements or suggestions provided by the school. However, after reviewing the school information, here are a few additional guidelines to consider. Laptops vs. Desktops Laptops are portable. That is their major advantage. This allows students to use their computer wherever they may be on campus, such as the library, dorm or classroom. If the campus offers a wireless network, a student can literally use a computer wherever anywhere… as long as their laptop has the type of wireless connector required to connect to the school network. A desktop computer has several advantages. First, a desktop computer cost less than a comparably equipped laptop. Generally, a desktop computer is easier to upgrade, so you should be able to use it longer. Finally, because the desktop is larger and more bulky, it is less likely to be stolen, dropped or damaged. Windows-based vs. Macintosh Many college campuses have installed networks that are primarily designed to work with PC computers. This means that a windows-based computer will insure greater compatibility with the school network environment. That does not mean a Macintosh computer or laptop will not work on the network. However, all the services and support of the network may not be available using a Macintosh computer. One big problem that normally occurs is the Macs inability to print on the network. On the other hand, if the school has set up a network designed to work with the Macintosh computer, the opposite would be true. Be sure you know what type of computer will maximize the use of the schools network resources. Warranty Suggestions Most laptop computers have a one-year warranty, while desktop computers generally have a three-year warranty. Because you will probably rely on your computer extensively, it is a good idea to have at least a three-year warranty on any computer you intend to use at school. It’s also a good idea to have on-site support in case something goes wrong with the computer. Minimum Computer Configuration: Desktop:
