What is Spyware Software? Spyware, as it is used on the Internet, commonly refers to Advertised Supported software. This is also called Adware. This is one option that shareware authors use to make money from a product they develop. Rather than charge for the product, the shareware program usually displays banner advertisements from large companies. In turn, these companies are willing to pay the shareware author a percentage of the revenue generated from the banner ads. In most instances, the user can remove these banner advertisements by paying the author for the program. The technical definition for Spyware is any technology that assists in gathering information about a person or organization without their knowledge or consent. On the Internet, spyware is any programming that uses “spybots” to gather user information and transfer it to another party without the users knowledge. Spyware could be a software virus or simply part of a program downloaded and installed onto your computer. If the user knows that a shareware program is gathering information about their computer or surfing habits, this is not technically called spyware. The main problem on the Internet is most users do not know that a shareware program they downloaded and installed includes spyware programming that tracks and relays user information. Some companies are notorious for burying in small fine print any details about gathering and reporting techniques included in their program. There are several software applications that will remove suspected spyware from your computer. Two free spyware programs are Ad-Aware from LavaSoft and OptOut from Gibson’s Research company. You need to be aware that once you’ve removed spyware, the shareware program may no longer work. Spyware is not illegal, but the real issue is privacy. You should always be cautious about technologies that can send data to a third party. Technically, it is possible to send more data than you are aware of. Finally, there are millions of users who are not particularly concerned about the privacy hype. For this reason, many spyware programs continue to be some of the most popular shareware downloads on the Internet.
