An Ez Software Review
of Rating: ***** (5/5) The Norton AntiVirus (NAV) program for 2005 offers a simple firewall in addition to its antivirus protection. The new pre-install scan insures that NAV can be installed in spite of viruses that may attempt to prevent its installation. Once installed, NAV downloads and installs its antivirus file updates. No other antivirus program has received so many consecutive years of certified ratings, as has NAV. The program has a remarkable record for stopping viruses, worms as well as monitoring file transfers and instant messaging. In the latest study by AV-Test.org, it caught 100 percent of all viruses and worms. Norton AntiVirus 2005 is set up to block viruses, adware, spyware and other malicious types of applications. It checks both email and file transfers to and from your computer. The Internet Worm protection feature of NAV is similar to the windows firewall. It blocks unwanted data packets, known Trojans and connections from illicit IP addresses. It also monitors programs that try to email themselves as attachments. Although this simple firewall offers some monitoring protection, it does not do nearly as good a job as a designated firewall program such as Norton or McAfee Personal Firewall. By default, NAV scans all type of files using the Windows Task Scheduler. It stops email processing upon detecting a virus until the user replies. We recommend that you change the default setting to have NAV automatically fix problems when they are detected. A detailed reporting log tracks all in and out security events that were blocked by NAV. The log includes the IP address, port, number of bytes sent and duration. The user can link the Symantec Web Site to get detailed information about each security threat. Norton AntiVirus 2005 remains an excellent program for virus protection. Although the new Internet Worm Protection option provides some security, it is strongly recommended that you use a separate firewall program such as Norton Personal Firewall. |
