McAfee Personal Firewall Plus 2005 (MPF) provides firewall protection for your personal or home office PC. MPF provides a wealth of information, but with so many options, it can be confusing, particularly to the first time user.

Installing the McAfee Personal Firewall is quick and easy. You must reboot your computer upon completion of installation. By default, MPF provides a balance between security and convenience. These defaults provide common protection yet allow such options as streaming media and ActiveX Controls. Under the Utilities option, you can use the Setup Assistant to customize your firewall settings.

Although the MPF interface appears simple and uncluttered, it is sometimes difficult to find the exact information you want. Each menu pops up its own window; so you literally have to drill down to get to the configuration settings for some options. Most users will probably opt for the default settings.

McAfee Personal Firewall 6.0 protects your personal online banking information from potential fraud. Any time an Internet website requests personal information such as your credit card or social security number, MPF will alert you.

McAfee provides free e-mail support and online chat assistance. However, their phone support cost is $39.95 per incident. That is quite expensive for a home user. The MPF support site provides a huge resource of information and help. You can get help on installing and downloading the program, as well as, important error messages.

In summary, McAfee Personal Firewall provides good firewall protection for you personal PC. The fact that there are so many options and levels of configuration make it a little difficult for the casual user to navigate. However, MPF does what it says it does… it protects your computer from outside security risks.
