What You Need to Know About Freeware

Freeware is software free of charge. Commonly, you download freeware over the Internet. Freeware software is among the most popular download requests on the Internet. Many businesses release free software as a way to attract more customers to other products or services they may offer. The idea is to build trust in hopes that you may purchase another product from them. Still, other companies release freeware software because it is outdated or no longer worth selling, but still has some value for the user.

However, as technology continues to advance, more people and businesses are relying on the Internet for their software and information. It is becoming very difficult to keep your computer free of advertising.

Freeware is often referred to as Adware. This is an alternative method to paying for software. Freeware software generally displays some type of advertisement while you are using the software. This advertisement usually shows as a pop-up box or in a small section of the software interface. In some cases, they can be very annoying.

Occasionally these free programs prevent certain software options from functioning until you register (pay for) the program. However, most of the time the program does allow you to use all the features as long as you view the advertisements. The popular Eudora email program is a perfect example. It has a sponsor mode and a paid mode. The sponsored mode displays an ad window with advertisements.

In some instances, freeware programs collect information about your computer and surfing habits without your knowledge. People often refer to this as “Spyware”. This information is then sold to a third party as a means for generating revenue.

Besides the privacy issue, you need to know that freeware can cause you computer to become sluggish. If you sense your computer is slowing down and “acting funny”, chances are you have some freeware advertising software that is taking to many resources away from your computer. You can download programs that will delete adware and spyware from your computer. However, when you do this, the chances are your “free” software will not continue to operate any longer.

As long as a program does not have a virus or malicious programming code and you don’t mind advertisements displaying, freeware is a viable alternative to purchasing software. The only caution I would give is this: If you have a task to complete that has a deadline, you’re better off using paid software, which provides good support. Otherwise, the “free program” may not be so cheap.
