Computer Viruses: Macros and Worms A computer virus is any programming code that has the ability to replicate itself by inserting itself into other programs or files. The results of these computer viruses are always malicious. The end result is that these viruses destroy or damage data on your computer. Two types of viruses are common. The first is a macro virus. The second is a worm. These viruses are created by computer programs and then released primarily over the Internet and disk media. One major concern for viruses is email. Viruses are notorious for being present in email attachments. This type of email computer virus has produced devastating and costly problems throughout the world. Macros are small pieces of programming code that can be embedded within a data file. Two widely used and popular programs use macros extensively. These are Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, which are both developed by the Microsoft Corporation. Because these programs use macros extensively, they are high priority targets for macro viruses. However, any program that makes extensive use of macros is a potential virus target. Normally, worms are computer programs that have the ability to replicate themselves. Worms spread themselves over network systems and over the Internet. The main difference between a macro virus and a worm virus is that worms are separate programs. Whereas macro viruses attach themselves to a data file, worm viruses do not. Nevertheless, the end result of a worm or macro virus is the same. You should use antivirus software to protect your computer from virus attack. It’s not a matter of if you’ll have to deal with a virus. Rather, it’s only a question of when you’ll have to deal with a virus. About The Author: Larry Andrew is an educational consultant, author and publisher of www.ez-software-review.com.
