Use Video Editing Software to Edit Your Own Videos

Why not take those old video tapes that are sitting around and collecting dust and do something with them. Digital video camcorders are dropping in price and increasing in quality. Now, it’s much easier to edit your own videos at home on your own computer.

Because computers are faster than ever and hard disk space is so cheap, you can quickly and easily download your video from a camcorder to your computer. Once the video is on your computer, you can edit, delete and even add dates, titles, logos, graphics, etc. Your imagination and software is your only limitation.

In years past, you had to edit video linearly. That has changed. Now you can access your video files quickly and in any order you choose. It’s similar to using a word processor where you cut and paste paragraphs and move them around to make a logical document.

To edit your own videos, you need four things:

First, you need a fast computer. Most computers today have the speed to do video editing. Ideally, you need a processor that is 2 GHz or faster with a minimum of 256 MB of RAM. The more RAM you can get, the better.

Second, you need a lot of storage on your computer. At a minimum you should have at least 30 GB of storage. It takes approximately 13 GB of storage for a one hour of compressed video. Many computers today come with over 100 GB of storage. Get as much disk space as you can afford.

Third, you need a video capture card to capture, edit, play and record your videos. Today, the most popular digital video capture cards are FireWire or DV cards. Many current computers include a FireWire port. Be sure to check it out.
