Three
Questions to Ask Before Purchasing Everyone wants to get a good deal on software. It’s always nice to get a discount on software and then download it quickly over the Internet. We live in an instantaneous society, so naturally it’s easy to hurry up and purchase that software. However, before you rush out and spend your hard earned money on discounted software, there are at least three questions you should ask yourself. The more honest you are in your answers, the happier you’ll be with your software purchase decision. First, what are you going to do with the computer software program? Do you want to use it for entertainment or do you want the software to save you time and effort in your home business? If you need productivity help, what are the three specifics things you need help with? Write them down. Get as specific as you can. Next, will the software run on your computer? If you have an older computer, you need to check very carefully on the minimum requirements of the software. It doesn’t make any difference if it’s discounted or not if it won’t run on your computer. Ideally, you should test the program before you purchase. If you can’t test it, then ask someone who is using the program what his/her experience is with the software. Check out reviews and discussions of the software on the Internet. Get to know as much as you can about the program. Finally, how important is the task your software will perform? If the software is for entertainment, then “worst case scenario” is you loose your money if it doesn’t live up to your expectations. However, if you are dependent upon your software to run your business, report your taxes and keep you abreast of your cash flow, it could be very costly to encounter unanticipated problems. The IRS really doesn’t care what software program you’re using when it comes to taxes, they just want you to pay them regularly. Here are a few things to remember about discounted software. Often it does not come with support, i.e., you can’t ask the company questions about it. Many times it does not include an instructional manual. Occasionally, it is so outdated and will not run on your computer. Sometimes it is illegal software that is being pirated, which could make you liable. Cheap or free software may include adware (spyware) that can slow down the performance of your computer. Here’s the bottom line… if you want cheap software and are not dependent upon it for meeting deadlines or producing revenue, you’re not likely to have serious problems. If you use discounted software for critical tasks, be sure you do your homework. The best software may not be the least expensive software.
