Twelve Common Computer Terms Today, it would be hard to comprehend not having a computer in your home or business. Originally, a computer was any device that could be used to do calculations. The term Personal Computer or PC has now become a household name. These computers are referred to as microcomputers. Today, there are two major types of personal computers. These are IBM compatible or windows based computers and Macintosh computers. Apple manufactures the Macintosh while many different companies manufacture IBM compatible computers. IBM is the most widely used. However, graphic designers and desktop publishers frequently use the Macintosh. Here are twelve terms that are frequently used when discussing computer technology: CPU (Central Processing Unit): This is the heart of the computer and is also referred to as the microprocessor. Monitor: This is the computer display. Common sizes are 14, 15 and 17 inches. This is the diagonal distance across the viewable part of the video screen. Keyboard: This is the device used to type information into the computer. The normal computer contains 104 keys and uses the QWERTY format. Mouse: This is a hand operated pointing device that controls a pointer on the computer monitor. Printer: This computer component produces the hard copy (printed page) of what you have entered or viewed on your computer. Two popular types of printers are laser printers and inkjet printers. Floppy Disk: This is a removable storage disk used to store data and programs for your computer. The most common size is 3.5”. Hard Disk: This is the main storage component of a computer. It is also referred to as a fixed disk because it is not removable. They are capable of storing large quantities of data and programs. Today’s hard disks store 200 to 300 times more than the original hard disks. RAM (Random Access Memory): This is the amount of working room within your computer. The more RAM your computer has, the quicker and easier it is to use. Peripheral: This is any device that is connected to your computer. Monitors, keyboards and printers are common peripheral devices. Hardware: These are the physical pieces of equipment used in your computer. Software: These are the programs that provide instructions to your computer.
